How are you spending your bank holiday?
AN INTERVIEW WITH JOCASI FOUNDER AND DESIGNER, CARLA SWINNERTON
Why Bags? I love accessories. I have previously sold clothes, bags, jewellery and shoes. But bags are where my passion truly lies and it’s great to see other people wearing my designs. It was because of my bags that the brand was noticed and took off, along with the name of course!
Tell me about your first ever bag design? It was the Kepis bag. Kepis means an old fishing bag. When I was living in Bali, many locals used a fish-shaped bamboo carrier to keep the fish fresh for the journey home. This was inspiration for my first bag which I adapted and became a smash hit success.
What fashion trends do you like in bags? Big, slouchy bags that are soft, light and easy to carry. Exactly how I make all my bags. My products are design led, rather than trend led – I try to create bags that are timeless classics.
What sorts of materials do you like to work with? Ethically sourced goat and sheep leathers because they are thinner, smaller and lighter than the cow hides.
Who or what is your inspiration for your handbag designs? I am inspired by my daughter. She is stunning, she is beautiful. So, I design my bags with her in mind.
What makes you unique from other handbag designers and are there any that you admire? My independence. I’ve got my own mind and I can do what I want to do. If a product is not beautiful, then I won’t have it. Mulberry is my favourite handbag designer. But I also like Marni and Balenciaga.
How did you get into fashion? I didn’t take any formal fashion qualifications because it is a skill that has been in my family for generations. Jocasi came about because I started designing clothes as a hobby whilst living in Bali and then built it up from there.
What would be your advice for someone wanting to get into fashion? Believe in yourself and follow your dreams. Think of fashion with your heart. Do it for the passion and your love for it rather than the money. Desire and ambition is essential.
